Ecopoetry
"Human beings have a moral responsibility towards nature."
(Berdinesen 2018)
Why ecopoetry?
Ecopoetry in Italy is a fairly new genre, and the growth of this literary phenomenon is important as it brings awareness to current and pressing environmental issues such as wildfires, sea level rise, air and water pollution. My research will explore a selection of poets who engage with these environmental challenges, and I will utilize this as a means of examining Italy's local identities and landscapes. In particular, the concept of “home” (oikos), central to ecology and ecopoetry itself, will be highlighted, understood as the place inhabited not only by humans, but by all creatures who are locally and globally affected by these environmental issues.
